Some of a person's travel expenses can be calculated as 'tax deductible'. For example, for ten years, I was employed by a company doing a job in a number of different locations each day. This meant travelling from home to job A and then continuing later to job B and C etc. The taxman does not pay for the journey from home to work and back, but he does pay for all those journeys in between. If your work means you travel from A to B and then on to C, D, E etc., you are entitled to a tax rebate on some of the cost of your travel. In my case this amounted to about £4.20 per day tax rebate.

If you fall into anything remotely like the above category, keep all your travel receipts and get some of your money back. Claim.

I now have the London Freedom Pass so do not pay anything to travel in and around London.

British Rail was broken up and privatised some years ago. As the train operating companies are private companies, and are driven by the need to make a profit, they are hardly going to let you use their service for free. Unless the government gave them a massive increase in subsidies - which would mean your taxes would have to be put up!!

Other than in the South East I doubt if most use it to get to work.

The tax is all used up looking after people who cannot run their daily life without supervision or outside help.

If the govt are genuinely serious about getting us out of our cars, they could try paying people who use the railways!

They way the trains are overcrowded its an insult to pay what they ask for in fares!

I don't know about free - I'd be happy if they were safe. Rail disasters seem to be occurring with increasing regularity.

You guys keep giving up your municipalities to private corporations and the first thing you give up is the control of price. It is not a long term way to do it.

No but it should be re-nationalised and then it wouldn't all be about profits for the shareholders and would actually be about maintaining the railways properly, ensuring their safety and government culpability.

Not free necessarily, but severe discounts for residents and UK citizens. Better discounts for season tickets etc etc.
