Maybe you could discuss Coleridge's inspiration to write the poem. Some say he was inspired by James Cook's second voyage, others say it was his friend's interest in another book by a sea captain named George Shelvocke or another story about the Wandering Jew.

Needless to say, Coleridge was rumored to take opium. Maybe his inspiration was from seeing things while drugged with opium.

It makes for interesting discussion anyway to search out WHY he wrote such a poem in the first place.

What kind of points are you looking for? My personal favorite point to argue was that the old man telling the story was actually the man on the ship...where others believe that he is just a crazy old man telling tales...
