The earliest a pregnancy test will be accurate is right beore your period is due. You can take an early results pregnancy test (like First Response) a few days before you expect your period (up to 5 days before) and possibly get a positive if you are pregnant. However, if the result of this test is negative and you don't get your period as normal then you should retest because it may have just been too early to detect the hormone. Since everyone is different it's hard to say when the exact 1st day you can test is. Best Wishes!

A pregnancy test detects the hormone HCG which is produced by the baby after it implants in the uterus. The baby implants 6-10 days after conception and it takes a little while for the hormone levels to build up enough to detect. Usually, 2 weeks after conception is very accurate for testing.

Even if you ovulated on the day you had sex and conceived, it would still be another 6-10 days before the baby implanted. Then another few days before the hormone could be detected.

If you didn't ovulate, you could still have had fertile cervical fluid present. Fertile cervical fluid can keep sperm alive for up to 5 days while they wait for ovulation. If sperm are present when an egg is released, conception could take place. Again, a pregancy test wouldn't be likely to be accurate until 2 weeks AFTER the conception, regardless of when the sex took place.

If you are interested in knowing more about your cycle, you could chart your fertility signs. Your chart can tell you when you are fertile, when you are not, when you are ovulating, when to expect your next period, and when to suspect pregnancy. Your chart can also tell you if there are serious issues which need a doc's attention. Charting can also be used to AVOID pregnancy.

Some good sources for charting your fertility signs: Fertilityfriend.com (free software as well as a pay-for version and on-line charting turorial); ovusoft.com (discussion boards for many fertility related issues, much info on fertility after the pill, and a very good software for purchase). The books Taking Charge of Your Fertility (associated w/ the the ovusoft website and software), The Art of Natural Family Planning, and Garden of Fertility

Not this soon. The earliest tests are slightly effective at 5 days before you miss your period (about 9-10 days after sex), to get into the 99% effective range you have to wait until you actually miss your period. Taking one right now would be a waste of money.
