*Spoiler Alert!* dont read if you havent seen the movie!

In the end, when Dignam (Mark Wahlberg) killed Sullivan (Matt Damon), I thought it was because he found out that Sullivan was Costello's (Jack Nicholson) rat, the rat they've been looking for all along. But someone told me Dignam was a rat too, that that's why he killed Sullivan- so he wont be traced.
This guy also told me that in stories (or movies) like this, there's always more than just one rat, more than just what's or who's obvious.
Do you think Dignam was Costello's rat too? Did you like how they ended the movie?

No the only rats in Frank Costello s (Jack Nicholson) ring was Sullivan (Damon) and Trooper Barrigan (James Badge Bale). Sgt. Dignam (Wahlberg) found out Sullivan was the FBI rat after he was in his house. He originally went to his house for revenge and confront him since Sullivan cost his job and reputation. When he realized he was the rat he decided to not just confront him but kill him. Sullivan to only cost him his job but he was the rat who killed Billy Costigan (Leonardo DeCaprio) and was never caught. He was the ultimate rat. Killing him would end everything so Dignam killed him out of self anger and is duty. Trooper Brown (Anthony Anderson) might ve been a rat at sometime but later switched back to the FBI. he wasn t on Frank Costello s side long enough to know Sullivan was the rat unlike Trooper Barrigan who was a full time rat like Sullivan. I am almost sure I am right can someone correct me if I am wrong.

Never thought of it that way at all, but that is why the ending of the movie is so great. It can be interpreted in numerous ways. I, being a boring strait forward person, would tend to beleive that the envelope Billy gave to the psychiatrist would have included incriminating info on Sullivan, which was given to Dignam. Dignam killed Sullivan because he was responsible for the death of his friend and boss and Billy. But, why wouldn't Dignam have just turned in the info and ruined Sullivan's life, that would have been worse for Sullivan. Maybe Dignam was really a rat as well or at least connected to Costello somehow. Maybe Dignam was mad that Sullivan killed Costello. I don't know but it is definately a great ending.

The way I see it, who ever was a rat died in the movie. So I tend to believe that Mark Wahlberg was not a rat because he lived in the end.

No he wasn't a rat. Mark Wahlberg killed Matt Damon because Matt Damon was Costello's rat. And therefore didn't protect the FBI capitan when he was killed in the abandoned building... you know what I am talking about? So No Mark Wahlberg was not a rat.

The impression I got from watching the movie is Dignam (his character) wasn't a rat, he just killed Sullivan because he found out HE was the rat for Costello. So no, he was not a rat, just doing his job.

Mark is not the rat even though i was thinking he might just be, but he is not! Mark knew that showing up at matts house was the only way to get rid of matt (the fbi rat) and to get "revenge" because as you can see, matt got away with the whole thing. the guy that killed leonardo was the second rat and thats the reason why mark had the shoes covered etc to cover his tracks so he wont be traced back as killing the "hero" matt damon

The scene where Dignam quit is the giveaway. It was staged. Dignam was either the guy charged to keep the MSP clear of rats, or was a Fed cleaning up the last business the MSP/Feds had with Costello
