Yes they can be faulty for a woman. I had a dear friend that sitting in her OB'S office 3 months pregnant took a pregnancy test to show her doctor that she was in deed pregnant and that the tests were wrong.
It is possible, the best thing to do is either go to your gyn/ob or to a place like planned parenthood. Either will test you again and if they still come up negative they will do a sonogram {internal} and if they find nothing then they will do blood work...just to make sure you don't have an ectopic pregnancy.
Best wishes to you

Negative results in a home pregnancy tests might sometimes be wrong, but I wouldn't worry about it if you're only 1 week late.
I am always on time as well, but long flight/ travel, stress or even worrying too much about it will sometimes caused delay.
You should just calm down for now and wait until you are at least 2 weeks late before you take the test again.

Even if you normally have very regular cycles, you can still occassionally have a wonky cycle. This is usually caused by delayed ovulation. If you ovulated late, your period may not actaully be due yet and so not late.
I highly recommend charting your fertility signs. Your chart can tell you when you are fertile, when you are not, when you are ovulating, when to expect your next period, and when to suspect pregnancy. Your chart can also tell you if there are issues delaying conception or causing difficulty w/ carrying a pregnancy and if there are serious issues which need a doc's attention.
Some good sources for charting your fertility signs: Fertilityfriend.com (free software as well as a pay-for version and on-line charting turorial); ovusoft.com (discussion boards for many fertility related issues, much info on fertility after the pill, and a very good software for purchase). The books Taking Charge of Your Fertility (associated w/ the the ovusoft website and software), The Art of Natural Family Planning, and Garden of Fertility

This happened to me. I ended up being pregnant!! What happened was that I had ovulated later than I usually do and the tests were not picking up the hormone yet. I went in to the obgyn, took a pee test, it was positive, They then did the blood test which showed the levels were low which put me only a week pregnant.

stuff happens when youre unexpectadly late, whether you usually are or not...but tests are definately not always right. some cant detect the hormones of pregnancy because of various reasons just because your body's different than everyone elses. Go to a Planned Parenthood near you if the tests still show negative and if you dont get your period still. I recommend them, and find out for sure. most services are free if you're under 18 and not covered by health insurance. the website's plannedparenthood.org and it may help.

They are almost always accurate. Especially from where you are at in your monthly cycle. Lots of things can mess up a woman's cycle, like stress. When I was pregnant my Doctor took my home test results as accurate and did not retest me, but you could get a blood test and ease your mind if you are still concerned.

There are many instances of false negatives and not necessarily because of the test....you just may not have enough hcg in your system yet...wait a little longer and then retest. If by then it isn't positive or you haven't started your period make an appointment with the doctor and they can do a more accurate blood test.

You can go to the doctor and take a blood test. Pregnancy test are most accurate if you take them on the first "P" of the morning. That way you have more hormones built up

Did you actually take the time to read the box the tests came in? I am pretty sure you did not cinsidering if you had of then you would know that pregnancy tests tend to be 98-99.9% accurate. If you didn't read the box for that bit of information then chances are you may have not followed the directions correclty and you might be pregnant.
