They never bothered to learn the principles of the prescriptive grammar.

I LOVE this question!!! I myself have OFTEN wondered what in the world is the deal here! I mean spelling really isn't hard to learn and it would help those who don't know how to spell to use the Spell Checker.
I have seen SO MANY misspelled words on Yahoo from other people that it simply amazes me how in the world they function in society.
Again, a great question, especially from someone still in school. :-)
I didn't check my spelling either, so I'm hoping I didn't make a typo! LOL

I think it boils down to laziness; people type so fast and don't bother to make sure what they've written is presentable.
I also think people try to abbreviate what they're saying (like with IM) and that carries over into their day-to-day writing.
But, then again, some people are just genuinely clueless when it comes to spelling & grammar! It's not just on-line: ever see Jay Leno's Headlines segment? It's primarily bad spelling & grammar!
On a comical note, I just saw a sign at a Wendy's; it read exactly: Fish sandwiches for Lint.
Aargh!!!
:)

I agree with you in principle, but your examples do not prove your point. The two examples that you gave are not due to poor grammar skills, they are simply misspellings that, when using a keyboard, are known as typos.
Examples of bad grammar are not capitalizing at the beginning of a sentence (ex. "why do a lot..." or "no, I did not"), not using punctuation correctly, starting sentences with a preposition such as "But that would be...". In short, your post.

Actually my cat has better grammar skills and does well in spelling. As she has so clearly demonstrated on several occasions by walking across my keyboard!!

People are lazy. Many don't see this as a "valid" means of communication and they realize that most people will never know who they are, so why put forth the effort?
It is aggravating though, I will give you that.

I've noticed that a lot of people are bad at grammar. Yeah, I do think it's annoying. If you can't spell, please use spell check. =)

Those people are here for us to make fun of. I know, I know - I ended the sentence with a preposition, which is a no-no.
