The tuition is $4500 a month and I'd like to send him for a year or so to help him prepare for public school.

Did you try going through your public school system and getting your son classified so that he can get special education services? They may not send him to that school (the "Cadillac"), but they general will supply him with what he needs (the "Chevrolet") (speech, itinerent special ed. teacher, physical therapy, occupational therapy, counseling services, etc.). If you disagree with the CSE or the CPSE, you can ask for an independent evaluation by a developmental pediatrician or a psychologist. There are other steps you can take if you disagree with the path that the school is taking, like mediation, etc. Good luck!!

P.S. Some of the people who are posting here obviously do not have a special needs child and HAVE NO CLUE how expensive it is or how demanding it is. We don't ask to have a special needs child. It happens, though. They have special medical needs (try going on a gluten-free or dairy-free diet for a month!!). Some need very expensive therapy like ABA, which runs into the thousands of dollars every month. In addition to that, they may need daily speech therapy (more $$), occupational therapy once or twice a week to compensate for poor balance, and physical therapy to compensate for low muscle tone. Most families do not have the resources to pay for this, even though they do have jobs, and most are very well-educated and have GOOD jobs. Oh, and try finding respite care for a special needs child. Most regular day cares are not equipped for this. Those of you who suggest getting a job or looking under mattresses should go to a center that works with these very special children and look around. Also, volunteer to do some respite care for a family that is completely burned out, so that they can go out for a couple of hours and experience what it's like to have a much deserved break.

First I'd ask the specific private school what assistance they can give you or if they ever offer scholarships.

Secondly, how old is he? If he is already enrolled in public school and on an IEP and not making progress, than you can call for a meeting to discuss other placements up to and including a private school geared towards your son (and the school system might pay for it). However, the likelihood is that the school will fight you tooth and nail. You still might prevail if you are willing to fight for it.

Ask the Government seriously, There is a lot of grant/loan money for people with special needs. Good luck!!!!!! They will help knowing you will send him to public school.

Depends which state you live in....in FL you can ask for a McKay scholarship. Contact your local school board and ask for the special ed. department and ask what your options are.

Under the mattress? In between couch cushions? Your piggy bank? Pants pockets?

That's usually where I look.
