I am going to be going to be applying for college pretty soon and I have no idea what I want to be. I have so many ideas but I just don't know what would be a good thing to do. I want to help kids, I ABSOLUTLY love being around kids. I was thinking maybe a teacher, but I don't think they get paid good enough. Then I was thinking a pediatrician, but I can't deal with blood. And then I was thinking a councelor that helps kids with their problems. And then I was thinking of accounting major but I heard they don't get paid a lot and they don't work with kids. I don't know if anyone has any opinions please let me know!

Thank you

You can take assessment tests at the college to see what you're best at--of the things within your interests.

In the first two years of college, most people have to take basically the same courses anyway (writing, art, science, math, a history/humanity). Also, you can start out in Liberal Arts, which would mean that you could take various courses to see which ones you like (psychology, sociology, social services, etc.).

If you're thinking pediatrician--you're in for a lot of years in medical school, then internship, etc. A lot of time in school before you are qualified to work.

If you're thinking about a counselor, as in psychologist, you will most likely need a PhD in order to practice. The same goes for a social worker--at least a Master's Degree, and possibly a PhD.

To work at a social services agency as a counselor, you need at least a Master's, and the same goes for teaching.

Good luck--you have a lot of research to do regarding various careers, and how much education is required for each. :)

Well it sounds like you are kind of all over the place, you have gone from teacher (they dont make enough), pediatrician (blood), counselor (also dont get paid much), and accountant which is totally on the other side (but do not work with kids). What I have learned is do not pick a major just because it makes a lot of money, you want to be happy in life and you want to have a purpose in life. I have read a lot of articles about teachers who have retired millionaires because they were smart with their money and other teachers who worked until they were dead, and the same goes with any other profession, there are people who make six figures and have nothing to show for it and there is the opposite side. But the last thing you want to do in life is choose a major because it makes a lot of money and you are unhappy in life, you don't want to be in some company and regretting not becoming a teacher. If you truly love working with kids I would explore that option and at least see if it is something for you, but if living well is what you want then maybe take some general education classes in your first two years in courses you think you might be interested in making your major and direction in life.

Counselors to get ok amount of money. and you could use accounting not only for accounting specific positions.
My suggestion to you is just try a variety of jobs, since you're only beginning college, that's ok. Or try some Temporary Agencies, and ask them to place you in anything they have. Just don't put them on your resume, because temp jobs don't look good on resumes. And if after you are done with college you can tell them, you were in school (if they ask why there is a break in employment history.) You can try HR, they make decent money, and you can work at any company, with our without children. HR's are needed everywhere, same as retail managers or photography. but if you thought about pediatrician, maybe you can try nurse, when you're an RN(registered nurse) the highest nurse you can be, you mostly, do paperwork, administer medication, do check ups, assist in ER, but it takes a long time, and is hard to get accepted because of high volumne of ppls wanting to go into it. Or you can run your own health care organization, which is pretty easy. you just need i think one license from the State. anyway. good luck

Ask your school counselor to give you the test that tells what industry you would be good in. Another option is take some time off from school and explore. Maybe try working at a school or in a doctor's office. Often times a person goes to college and it's just a waste because once they're out, they figure out they want to do something completely different. Don't waste your time and money until you are REALLY sure of what you want to do with your future!

College is a good place to expose yourself to interesting fields of study. A lot of people who have no idea what they want to do for careers end up finding something that really interests them a lot in college. There are general education courses offered to make sure you are a well rounded scholar with some knowledge on a wide range of topics--sciences, literature, arts. There are career preparatory classes in the upper divisions, business classes, preparation for law, medical, or other professional schools. Just keep your eyes and your mind open for things that interest you. It could be anything! Maybe law?
