I majored in filmmaking specializing in directing/editing, but for now, my "day-job" is paying the bills. For now....

Go look at a web site for Theater Arts, then under directing, that will give you an idea. (University of Southern California has a big program for Theater Arts you can look at) Some courses would include stage movement, photography, movie history, maybe some in lighting, staging. As far as getting the jobs, they will have to work their way through the system. Take jobs as an assistant on projects (television or movies) and keep working their way along until someone will give them a chance. They have to be a production assistant, maybe an assistant director, it will take some time to work their way up to director unless they know someone in the business who can help them out with a referral to someone else.

A director of a corporation could have worked his/her way up in that organization and then be appointed or elected by other board members, they could also come from another entity and be elected.
The prerequisite would obviously be good experience and track record in the business management field. . . .or somebody with majority stock holding, but then think of how did they earned it.

Business Administration would be a good field to build knowledge. Even for medical or tech organizations etc., people in those positions had business backgrounds somewhere along the line.
