Very loaded question...I am curious to see the answers you get for this one. According to KRS-One "Rap is something you do...Hip-Hop is something you live" which speaks to the point that Hip Hop is not just the music...but it is the entire culture (clothing, vocabulary, braggadocio, lifestyle, etc...). Based on this opinion...many would argue that Rap is not Hip-Hop but in fact Rap is a part of the Hip Hop culture. So then, if we are talking about Hip Hop as a culture one would say that it was invented collectively by the MC's who would talk over the records that the DJ's would spin at house and block parties. Many sources point to Kool Herc as the originator of this, in fact to many he is known as the inventor and "Godfather of Hip Hop". Kool Herc came to the states (age 12) from Jamaica in 1967 and this style of "DJ-ing" was common in Jamaica in the dancehalls.

Some sources say that Hip Hop (culture and music) was not recognized by the United States mainstream audience and remained underground until the early 1980's. In 1979 the Sugar Hill Gang released a song that went multi-bronze and sold almost 1,000 copies "Rappers Delight". However, there were many MC's and DJ's before them, and many would follow.

Asking the question who invented Hip Hop is like asking who invented Rock and Roll. Some say Elvis, some say Chuck Berry, some say Little Richard, but no one can really pin point that actual one person as the originator which is why this question will always prove to cause a lot of discussion and sometimes even controversy.

Like the first person said, most people will say it is DJ Kool Herc, he set up the whole block party type thing, in which you had the MC pump up the crowd, the emphasis was still on the actual record but this trend of pumping up the crowd would evolve into a full on MC.

Some of the other founders of what would become hip hop, are obviously Grandmaster Flash, and Afrika Bambaataa, arguably one of the most creative artists of not only hip hop but all music.

If you're really interested there is a great book about the history of hip hop called Can't Stop Won't Stop by Jeff Chang, which actually has an introduction by Kool Herc, it's a really great read.
