Yes, you can get your money back.
This is a neat article detailing how to go about it:http://www.moneytowers.com/2006/banking-credit/claim-back-unfair-bank-charges/

There's also a template letter you can use: http://www.moneytowers.com/2006/banking-credit/template-for-claiming-back-unfair-bank-charges/

Yes ive also sent my letter detailing the charges... waiting for a reply also... HSBC charge £50 in fees each time! Im owed 1k... going back 5 years ... keep me posted on your progress?.... I know lots of consumer websites give good advice... but the Daily Mail supplied some excellent letter templates to use... If you missed the articles and want a copy.. let me know :-)

I have tried with other penalties and have managed to get a partial refund... that was at a private bank, though. Wachovia didn't even want to deal with me when I tried to get the fee they charged me when someone wrote me a bad check and they not only charged me for that, but charged a "deposit adjustment fee." I don't bank with them anymore because of all of the nickel and diming and not being able to get some of that famous customer service.

Hi i sent my letter and statements just before christmas. Got paid out 1300hundred quid (sorry pound sign doesnt work) last week. So hold on it takes them a while. Strictly speaking though, they are supposed to reply within 14days, then if they dont you are supposed to file a claim with the courts. But thats up to you, we decided against that.

Ive done letters for clients at work (two) and both got them back. If the bank dont pay up, you need to send a stronger worded letter and threaten court action. You may even need to issue court papers before they actually pay up. It seems that most banks are giving in at this stage.
Good luck
