Please read: I guerentee this answer (although very long) will thoroughly answer your question
I think corporal punishment should be used VERY VERY VERY rarely. Like let's say your kid is 12 and he goes out and runs away from home because you told him he was grounded because he got a D in Math on his report card and you are worried sick for hours because you don't know where he went and you find him in the woods. You tell him to never run away again and scold him. The next day He runs away to go grab a burger at burger king and you are worried again and find him in Burger king with his friends . Then I think a spanking is deserved and an extended grounding. But I think cororal punishment should be rare or not at all because sometimes it can make situations worse. For instance if your 13 year old daughter shoplifts a purse from a store while shopping with her friends and you hit her for it she might cal 241-KIDS and then the situation could get a lot worse. Or if corporal punishment becomes a habit you might get so used to it that you loose your temper and hit your child really hard and then he/she may be hospitalized or the authorities may get involved.
P.S. all of these instances have never occured and are just made up examples

I had the cane whilst at school, would have prefered the rap on the palm/Knuckles......it never did me much harm. The thing is most teachers/heads would probably end up getting stabbed for dishing out any corporal punishment today.

I believe in positive parenting. If you actively teach a child that his/her negative behaviour will have consequences they soon learn to accept boundaries. You should also teach your children to think, to empathise and have a good moral framework. So many parents seem to leave this to peers and TV these days. I think that using violence as a form of discipline only teaches children that violence is appropriate. It is a psychological fact that it is not the severity of punishment that is effective, it is the certainty of it. Parents and teachers need to work together to correct bad behaviour. If more parents backed up school sanctions with loss of privileges at home, or even basic disapproval, behaviour would improve dramatically.
The trouble is that today's government has all but crippled schools power to discipline children. It is all about inclusion, supporting children with "behavioural difficulties" and giving them rewards for anything remotely positive. Thus children are coddled and told their bad behaviour is not their fault. They have no reason to change. Financial penalties are incurred if children are permanently excluded. Teachers are no longer seen as respectable authority figures. Every child learns the value of the phrase "I will sue". Sad, but true.
As a teacher, I can certainly say that something needs to be done, whether it is a return to more draconian methods of control. I shudder to think about what will happen when the present "why bother?" generation hits the real world.

I was caned in school and I am glad that corporal punishment has been banned. The stress that I went through being physically assaulted daily by an adult teacher and watching my friends suffering the same treatment was unbelievable.
These teachers abused their power and, if they were in a bad mood, they would beat up any child they wanted to knowing they could get away with it.

Obviously child dependent on what they respond to but, having grown up where you can do all of the above, they are all painfull and for some effective..I personally do not think hitting a child does anything other than set up resentment or a big challenge of wills. There are better ways but it takes effort.I grew up with spanking as a punishment , not abuseful, but it sure made you pay attention. It sometimes may have its place ( open handed and not in anger)Very controversial issue to some.....

Got battered enough as a kid by my dad so glad we never had corporal punishment at school. I think if it was about now the kids would have ago back, I know I certainly would!
If I had to choose I'd have a Ruler.

Yes siree - they still had the cane and dap when I was in school and they never should have gotten rid of it. Personally I would rather be whipped so I try and be naughty at least once a week!
