Hi any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I have a 95 ford escort wagon with over 100,000 miles on it. For the past month when I turn the car off I smell gas. I thought it was leaking and had my mechanic look at it. He couldn't find a leak and changed the gas filter(?) saying it was really old, but I'm continuing to smell the gas. Is this common and should I be worried? Thank you so much for your help.

May not be anything to worry about, but the last time I saw a car in which they smelled gas... well the fire took care of the smell and car. Just to be on the safe side I would find our where the gas smell is coming from.

no car made for the last 15 years or so should you EVER smell gas. it just shouldn't get out. Answers suggesting bad evap cannister or lines are right on. also check your exhaust pipe and make sure heat shields if any are in place. Could be cooking your tank. Check top of tank for seals around fittings and guage plate etc. you should be able to sniff around and locate it.

Smells like the evaporative emission canister is saturated or there is a small leak in the evap hose or filler pipe.

have your fuel rail checked, if that is loose then your injectors are loose and leaking gas around them, also if the mechanic didn't already do it , have someone check the top of your gas tank around the place where your fuel pump goes into to make sure it is properly sealed.

sounds like you could have a bad emissions control canister. commonly refered to has a charcole canister on it. it is responsible for traping and doing away with the fuel vapors not burned off as well as excessive vapors from the fuel tank. as far as being worried, no. its more of a nuesince then anything else.
