Fast-food restaurant: a restaurant in which the customer collects food from a counter and pays, then sits down and starts eating; a common feature is a lack of cutlery or crockery, the customer is expected to eat the food directly from the disposable container it was served in using one's hands. (from Wikipedia.org)

Subway is the #1 restaurant franchise in the world in terms of number of restaurants. In 2006, Subway had 26,197 franchises compared to McDonald's 22,554. Subway is listed as Entrepreneur.com's #1 franchise for 2007. The start-up cost of a Subway restaurant is very cheap (less than $200K) compared to other fast food chains ($500K - $2M). (from Entrepeneur.com)

So, therefore, Subway is definitely a fast food chain.

Yes, because it is. Think of it as Burger King with sub sandwiches.

Both have a similar practice of making custom sandwiches. One does it with burgers and chicken, and the other does it with lunch meat.
