If the van belongs to the company, then the company is well within their rights to track their own property.
Your privacy ends, with the exception of restroom activity and locker rooms, where your duty as an "employee" begins.

I'm afraid it will probably not be deemed an invasion of privacy. If it was a company car given for company and personal use and you were taxed as such, you may have more rights, but either way they are legally able to track your movements during company time. Be thankful, most companies with onsite technicians have them in mobiles and laptops to.

Presumably you have signed an agreement not to use the van for personal use out of hours. Technically that means you are not being monitored, since you are not expected to be driving the van, so your civil rights are unaffected.

Other than that, yes it could be a breach of your civil liberties if you are expected to be able to use the vehicle out of hours. Your company are not at liberty to monitor your (personal) out of hours movements. They can use tachographs or mileometers to check your off duty mileage without checking where and when you have been here or there. You should seek legal advice.

Additionally there is protection in employment law. Employers are not allowed to spy on their employees nor are they allowed to overly scrutinise your work (looking over your shoulder so to speak).

the company has every right to track the movement of it's vans, invasion of privacy would only come into effect if they had a camera installed in the drivers compartment

No not that I'm aware of.
The van is owned by a company and they have every right to know exactly where it is.

Nope, their vehicle, they can say where and how its used. You have NO rights about driving their van.
I drive a company vehicle and they have a GPS mounted in it. The vehicle is a tool given to you by your employer to do the job assigned to you. Its not for your after hours personal use.
