When you go shopping first write a list of what you REALLY need, add up approximately what everything will cost (plus tax just use 10% of the total) and bring maybe an extra $10. Bring the money in cash and leave your check book and credit cards at home. This will eliminate the ability to impulse buy. If you see something there that you absolutely HAVE to have go home, research it online and find the very best price before you buy.

Hi there,

What i have found helped me is by setting goals for yourself.

For example i want to save $300 to buy a new program or go somewhere.

If i read through this goal everyday and then when i'm out somewhere i'll ask myself, "Will this get me closer to my goal or further away from it?" This has greatly stopped me spending so much money on buying food and many materialistic things i don't need.

My other favourite thing to do is don't take your credit card, if you have one with you. Leave it at home so you can use it if you need it but then you have to go and get it and this gives you time to think about the purchase and about weather you really need it or not. I also only carry about $20 cash on me at any one time.

Leaving the credit card is fabulous but it doesn't help to stop me buying unneeded things on ebay........ :(

Cheers, ToNy!

First, pick up everything that catches your eye that you like. Put it in a basket or hold it in your hands, and walk around the whole store looking for all the things you like. Now, start over and walk around the store one more time. Except this time, think about how much you want to spend and whether or not what you have in your hands/basket is in your budget or is something totally worthwhile. If it is, keep it. If not, put it back.
