My best friends daughter in law whom is only 19, is a habitual liar. Along with that she always supposedly physically "Sick". I feel she has some mental issues.

Her and her husband just moved in with his mother, my friend. They have a 9 month old baby, whom is about 16 or 17 pounds. He seems to be a normal baby. Since they moved in about 3 weeks ago She does nothing but sleep all day and my friend takes care of her grandbaby. My friend started feeding him baby food & giving him bathes everyday cuz the mother seldom did. The mother flips him upside down alot too.

Anyhow the daughter in law took the baby to the doctor today and she claims that the doctor told her that it's not her fault but he is Malnutrition and changed his formula. Supposedly the doctor said to not feed him fruit just vegetable baby food. Also said he could be going mentally retarded because his body can't absorb the nutrition. Mind you he has gained weight since they moved in.

Do you think she is lying?

Also the daughter in law claims to be Bi Polar. my friend asked her to quit flipping him upside down but she refuses. She thinks it is funny to blow in his face so he loses breath. And will set and constantly do it too.
She also claims she is pregnant again but refuses to go to the ob/gyn. but says it is a high risk pregnancy and she could die. We believe she is just lying about the whole pregnancy.
Who knows though...
The girl really didn't want to mother in law to start feeding him baby food either. But my friend does anyways.
She is just real strange

She is always claiming

Your friend needs to start developing a case to prove that the mother (and father, for that matter) are unfit parents, and file a suit in a family court seeking custody of that poor child.

Some of the evidence that could prove unfitness is the mother's habitual lying, turning the baby upside down, her laziness, not bathing the baby, blowing in the baby's face and taking its breath away, admission of being bi-polar.

That's my suggestion.

Even if the baby has gained weight, that does not guarantee that he is healthy. It depends on what he is being fed. A diet that is high in sugars and cereals without any vegetables added to the diet could cause weight gain without some of the essential nutrients that the growing body is needing. Also if the child is being still fed formula, the grandmother should find out if it is the right formula for the child. Some children are allergic to certain formulas. If your friend suspects that her daughter-in-law is lying, and is doing harm to her grandaughter, she should talk to her son about the problem. But,unless your friend gets accurate information from a pediatrician, she will not be able know for certain if there is something wrong with the child.

Malnutrition in babies can delay mental development, but they usually catch up quickly once they start getting proper nutrition.

From the doctor's point of view, if the mom lied and said she fed him regularly, it would make sense to switch the formula. My doctor also recommends starting with baby cereals and vegetables, and leaving the fruits till later - they have a higher sugar content, and the baby might develop a sweet tooth and refuse non-sweet foods later.

I think your friend should call the doctor's office and speak to the doctor. She should tell him why she is worried, and ask for clarification on how much to feed the baby, and what he should be eating.

Possibly. My daughter had problems with formula too, and if it's giving him diariaha, then yes, he could be malnutrioned, and that would be another reason to avoid fruit. Babies need fat for their brains to grow, that's why nutrion is so important from brith to 2 especially. I'm not sure it would make him mentally retarded though.

I think she is lying... and it sounds like someone else needs to step up and have this child taken away from her. If its your friend that is taking care of this baby, that friend should be allowed to go to the doctor's visits too.

yes, i had a friend that when she was pregnant she wouldn't eat nutritious food and her baby girl came out with down syndrome because of the malnutrition.

Who knows? BTW weight gain does not mean the person is receiving/absorbing proper nutrients...obese people can be malnourished.
