Lowe's no fool. Smyth may be back and the Oilers now have more to work with in terms of young talent and draft picks. No decent hockey player is going to stay in Long Island with Yashin already there. He's a bonefide jerk.

Same reason the Flyers traded Forsberg. Odds are Edmonton isn't going to make the playoffs so the might as well give up a player for some gain. He becomes a free agent at the end of the seaon so the Islanders (who are desperate to make the playoffs right now) will only have him for the rest of the season. Odds are Smyth will resign with the Oilers next season, just like Forsberg will probably go back to the Flyers.
The Penguins did the same thing with Mark Recchi last year, he won a Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes then came back to the Pens for this season.

I'm shocked to hear that a guy like Ryan Smyth could be traded. Edmonton got pretty crap players for him. I can't believe Kevin Lowe would make such a bad deal. I mean, O'Marra, Nilsson and a first-rounder for your franchise player? That's not nearly enough for a player as skilled and valuable to a team like Smyth. It's supposed to be because Edmonton couldn't sign him in time. He wanted a 5.5 million deal, but the Oilers couldn't afford it or something.

I think they trade Smyth because they did not want to pay him a bigger contract. But when you have one of the best players the Oilers should not have trade him. I was so sure that they would give him a new contract. Today is a sad day in HOCKEY.

I don't mind that they traded him. I just wish they didn't trade him to the Isles. They also got Zednik. That makes them tougher for the Pens to beat. Maybe at the end of the season Smyth will sign with the Pens. I like that dude he is a great winger.
