For most of my other kitchen surfaces I use a Bleach /water solution which can not be used on porous surfaces. I know I can't ammonia, and I would like to avoid buying special expensive cleaners made especially for granite.

Clean with one part vinegar mixed with nine parts water. There was research done, and this proved the most effective

Dear cranium_h:

You may want to consider sealing your granite top (every two years) by doing so would safe guard the porous material and at the same time prevent bacteria growth. It is relatively inexpensive and for cleaning you only have to wipe it down with a towel that has been submersed in warm water.
