You have asked the question wrong. It's the classic "As I was going to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives. Each wife had seven sacks etc."

The question is, "How many were going to St. Ives?" and the answer is one, since only you are positively identified with going there, no matter how many people you meet, with however many sacks and cats and kittens.

Even if you go with your "version," you never identified what you were looking for - how many men? women? cats? so the question is still wrong.

There was a man and there were 7 wives with 7 sacks which had 7 cats with 7 kittens.

Therefore each wife had 1 sack with 1 cat and 1 kitten and 1 man on the bench.

Well the riddle isn't clear, but if you mean how many people and things are there in total it is 2,801 because you take 7 and square it and get 49, then take 7 to the power of 3 and get 343, finally you take 7 to the power of 4 and get 2,401. If you add up all the numbers, you get 2,801.

So, in a more easier looking way there is/are...

1 man
7 wives
49 sacks
343 cats
2,401 kittens

Total number of people/things is 2,801

If this isn't what you are looking for, then I'm sorry, you were not clear enough.

I think you mean:
"As I was traveling to St. Ives, I met a man with 7 wives. Each wife had 7 sacks, each sack had 7 cats. Cats, Sacks, and Wives...how many were traveling to St. Ives?"

And the answer is one - "As I was traveling to St. Ives....."

Your riddle is called St Ives.

It goes like this:

As I was going to St Ives
I met a man with seven wives...

The last line is

How many were going to St. Ives

The answer. Only one.
Why, because in the opening line "I met" means that the other man was COMING from St Ives.

The riddle is very old. Some say 2-3 hundred years. It doesn't work unless the words "I met" are included. Your park model does not work properly.

hope that helps.

By the way, how many were Coming from St Ives????
