I work for a small company and we currently run Apache on port 80 and Websphere on port 85 on an AS400. We are installing a new Windows server for Websphere and I am wondering if I should leave Apache on the AS400 so that both can use port 80 on seperate servers or if I should put them both on the Windows server to get away from the AS400 for the web.

The AS/400, or now known as the iSeries is an excellent platform for websphere. The iSeries is a multithreaded system and can definitely handle the load. As the other person pointed out, the more memory and disk you have, the better you will be.

You could definitely run on the same system on both port 80 and 85. Getting away from the AS/400 would probably not be the best solution. You already have a readymade solution in the AS/400. My last company ran their gift registry system for over 550 stores on an AS/400 and Websphere.

If in doubt, call IBM and find out how to best fully utilize your iSeries for the web. You may be pleasantly surprised

Sure, just make sure you have enough memory. Apache is pretty light weight, WebSphere can be a memory hog. I would have minimum of 4GB memory with a dual core processor (not familiar with AS400) or at the very least 2GB memory. I have seen Webspeher instance without running anything take up 200-400 MB of ram and if you plan on any complex programming tasks that may go up quickly.

Also depends on how much traffic you expect.
