wpa is considered the most secure type of encryption
might not work with some devices eg older gameboys.
i would stick with mac address control (in reality i leave my networks open- if someone abuses it i use mac address control to specifically block them)- you tell the router which mac address to allow (all network devices have a unique address). there will be a page covering this in the set up,
this can be broken (as can all other forms of security) but generally only by some one with the ability to spoof mac addresses.
the latter has the least impact on the network overhaeds/speed
the former uses a key which you need to give to the laptop and other pc.s ( a problem with pre xpsp2 machines)
apparently the fbi can crack wep in ten minutes and wpa in 20.
no such thing as real security but some thing might be better than nothing

Not sure about Zyxel but here is what I did for my linksys.
1. attach a computer to the router via a wired connection and login to the admin page -probably 192.168.0.1
Let's take security in stages.
STAGE 1.
Change the broadcast name of your router and then hide it.
i.e. do not stay with the initial name. -I have 5 routers I can see from my living room all called Linksys. I named mine denlink and then told the router NOT to broadcast (SSID).
STAGE 2.
change your admin password. You can get default passwords for wireless routers from google and so can all the wardriver hackers. So I would change this password soonest.
Check that you can still get onto the network from your wireless laptop.
STAGE 3. Find the page where you can turn on mac filtering. mac is short for media access control and is the unique hardware id of your wireless adapter. In windows open a cmd window on your laptop and type ipconfig -you will see your wired and wireless adapters -they will show their hardware ids -i.e. mac address. Put this into the filter page on your router admin interface thereby allowing only your laptop onto the network.
Check to see that you can get onto the network.
STAGE 4. Turn on WEP encryption on your router. On your laptop you will need to setup your passphrases to match what you specify on the router side. Before ;you do that make sure you cannot get onto the network -this shows that WEP is on and you cannot get on. Then when you change your laptop to use WEP and setup the keys and THEN get on then you know it is because you are using WEP.
STAGE 5. IF all this is going well, you could try moving up to some better encryption schemes such as WPA. WEP is the lowest common denominator. WPA is more recent and may or may not be supported on your router and on your laptop, but, if it is and you can puzzle it out -about as hard as setting up WEP, then you will have much better encryption.
STAGE 6. Tell your client on your laptop that ;you do not want to attach to other computers, only to infrastructure and that you only want to attach to your preferred networks. Otherwise you might start to use your neightbour's router by accident -which would be without encryption.

Read the manual that came with the router, also available ( in most cases) online.
Be prepared to be mystified when your router and laptop don't support the same encryption.
do an "ipconfig /all" in dosprompt, and filter MACs, setup WEP carefully writing down the LONG string of the password. (use ANY encryption supported by both) It may be hard to figure out which works. Plug your computer into the router when you can't connect anymore.

Go into the router....192.168.0.1 or watever it is
Go to the wireless section
Go the securities
find either the WEP or WPA and either
set it automatically or make your own.
Another thing you can do is diable the broascast of the SSID
which is the name of your wireless connection. If you disable it, then
no 1 will be able to know your connection is around.
Good Luck

you have to go to the settings on your router and change your secruity to WEP. Make a network key and remember it because you will need it for the other computers. Then enter this network keys on the other computers.
