The amount of time people say you should rest between exercising varies, but the truth is you need rest and it is individual based on your level of fitness, how strong your workouts are, age, and other factors.

When you work out you break your muscles down, during the days off they are rebuilding themselves to be stronger than what broke them down. If you interrupt that by working out again, you never make any progress.

depending on how hard you work on take between 2 and 3 days off before working out that same muscle or muscle group again.

Wait a few days, at least 72 hours, before any hard lifting. I usually lift the same part, (arms, chest, back, etc.) twice a week, or every four days, but it's up to you. But do give your body a chance to recuperate.

you should have at least 48 hours between your weight training sessions. your muscles will need all that time to heal. so work them every other day if you're doing a full body routine. also, make sure you're getting enough protein, stretching before and after you workout, and make sure you have a variety of exercises to do.
