With such a long history of racism, why do liberal Democrats, especially African Americans still vote for and keep electing the longest serving Democratic Senitor. I am a Christian first and foremost, I am politically conservitive secondly. Yes, I agree that forgiveness is divine, but in politics it seems that people do whatever it takes to get elected and stay there. Why would people belive this idiot, hell he still uses the "N" word. Not only was he the Klegal (recruiting director) for his locak KKK chapter, after he was elected to the U.S. House, he wrote a letter to the state KKK director saying they had to do more to increase recruitment, now that's sick.

As to why he gets a pass? Why do the Liberals give passes to Liberals but the same actions by a Conservative would result in long lasting public outrage? How often do you hear about Al Gore's father voting against the Civil Rights act (yet we hear that Mitt Romney's Great Grandfather had 5 wives on a daily basis). Double-standard and a willing media.

Byrd continues to be re-elected based on the millions of dollars in Federal Funds that he has brought into the state of West Virginia during his reign. If you have never driven through the state, it is amazing. Every where you look there is a building, a bridge, even a roadway named after him.

Senator Byrd is the "King of Pork" and the people in his state will continue to send him to Washington as long as he continues to "bring home the bacon".

Robert Byrd is from a time when using the n word was acceptable. He has his accounts of racism, but he admits he was wrong. As a resident of West Virginia and as far from a racist as you can get, I know along with my African American friends that this state would be so much worse if it wasn't for him. He is a good senator and knows more about the Constitution then any other senator wishes to know. He has so much experience and despite his age, he is a huge asset to The United States senate.

you're conflating ideologies with events. they don't look to be a similar. The Democratic and Republican events of over 50 years in the past bear little resemblance to their opposite numbers at present. human beings say super issues approximately ineffective human beings, that would not recommend they without delay cosign each and every thing that individual did of their existence. See: Margaret Thatcher. And hearsay from somebody who heard somebody who heard somebody say something isn't a source.

Old "Sheets" Byrd is a democrat, and therefore, he gets a free pass. What he did in the past doesn't matter. If the Black Caucus thinks he's ok, then he must be ok---and the Black Caucus dictates who Blacks should vote for and any Blacks who do differently are Uncle Toms or Aunt Jemimas in their eyes. Period.

I think Byrd was the Grand Kleagel of the KKK at one point.

Now, he is a leader in the Democrat Party

Not much has changed

Why the use of "i" in the place of "a"? A true conservative knows how to spell conservative. True conservatism has to do with fiscal responsibility (sadly missing with liberal GWB) not necessarily politics.
