IT'S A FELONY TO STEAL A CAR, CARJACKING PROBABLY GIVES MORE TIME, IF HE HAD A WEAPON-THAT'S COMMITING A FELONY WITH A WEAPON-LIKE ARMED ROBBERY.I KNOW YOU WANT THE GUY PUT UNDER THE JAIL BUT HE'LL HAVE AN ATTY, THEY WILL PLEA BARGAIN, AND UNLESS HE HAS OTHER STRIKES AGAINST HIM-HE'LL GET 12-25 YRS. IF YOUR WIFE SUFFERED ANY EMOTIONAL DISTRESS SUE HIM IN CIVIL COURT.

I don't know where you are, and I don't know the suspect's criminal history. If you are talking about country wide, given the worst possible criminal history: life without the possibility of parole if he's a third striker. Even if not, the federal penalty for carjacking is extremely high, and, assuming he was using a gun, all kinds of enhancements apply.

I'm sorry this happened to your wife. I hope she doesn't blame herself at all. Incidentally, I've heard of a lot of carjacking attempts being foiled by the driver just stepping on the gas.

I would try to get him off scot free.

Simply so I could hunt him down and find some new uses for my power tools.
