Wisdom, intelligence, and reason are not the same thing at all. In fact, some people might argue that wisdom is specifically the knowledge that comes from experience, despite what reason might state. For example, a reasonable person might argue that everybody should be reasonable, while a wise person will know that no matter what, they won't be.

Second, is it necessarily a bad thing? Reason is highly valued by the capitalist value system currently en vogue, but in the past reason was considered suspicious, or wrong. I'm not saying I don't like reason--I really really do--but I don't think that reason should automatically be elevated as the be-all, end-all way of acting and being. Emotions, intuition, the body, faith, these things all have their own kind of intelligence, which should also be valued. Just as the body without reason is bad, so is reason without the body.

The dumbing down of the human population can be linked to loss of reading skills thanks to TV, and a tired educational system. This may be particularly true in the United States. However, much of the rest of the civilized world still values a good education and a work ethic. With over half the U.S. population still having deep religious convictions, how far behind can superstition really be?

Because "Christians" think the vagina is a clown car. Seriously. Religious people have more kids. Therefore, statistically we're going to see a rise in the sorts of insane ideas characteristic of superstitious religion.

But all is not lost. Progress happens in spite of the best efforts of "conservatives" to halt it. All they can do is slow things down. A good idea is still a good idea. If religious people win in the short term by pumping out more cattle, in the long term we'll see those very cattle evolve despite themselves - or die!
