When people don't understand something/someone, they typically have on of two responses. The first is to do what a couple of people have already said: they mock or shun the thing that eludes their understanding because they fear it.

A second possible response IS to admire the thing which is not understood. I think sometimes people suppose, "Hey, I don't understand it, so that must mean it's very _____ (intelligent, artistic, cool, etc.)." They equate incomprehensibility with merit.
