You will hear a loud sound coming from before or right at the muffler and you may also hear a clattering sound. Possibly the catylitic converter has fallen apart and into to the muffler, you also may have problems with the car running correctly. Look under the car and see if you can see holes at the pipes going in or out of the muffler or the muffler itself could have hole in it

1. Loud noise.
2. Smell of exhaust.
3. You hear a scraping sound.
4. You can put your fore arm inside the muffler itself while still on the car.

First is the sound will change
Second is the smell (possibility of carbon monoxide getting in the car)
Third how long has it been or the car and are you in an area where there is alot of rust (FL LA etc)

if a muffler has a hole or something, it will make a lot more noise that a good muffler. A LOT more noise, you WILL notice it.

You will hear a loud roaring. Also maybe a slight loss in performance-if maybe the exaust has gotten clogged up with rust.

well if its really loud then its bad oir getting bad, or if its dragging on the bottom of your car thats a way to tell also
