Lincoln was the first president to be assassinated--I believe he was #16. He was succeeded by Andrew Johnson. I'm not sure of the numbers of the others, but James Garfield was assassinated in the 1880's, McKinley in 1901, succeeded by Theodore Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy in 1963, succeeded by Lyndon B. Johnson.

It all started with No. 16 Lincoln in 1865 (succeded by Andrew Johnson), then No. 20 Garfield in 1881 (succeeded by Chester Arthur), then No.25 McKinley in 1901 (Teddy Roosevelt), then No. 35 Kennedy in 1963 (LB Johnson)...that is not to say that other Presidents didn't die in office (WH Harrison died of pneumonia [Tyler took over]; Warren G. Harding died of a heart attack [Coolidge] and Franklin D. Roosevelt died of a cerebral hemorrage [Truman]).
