I had an abortion some five years ago. I've been married for a year and a half now but cannot conceive. I've been to the doctor and had an H.S.G which confirmed that my womb is alright and my tubes are not blocked. Is it also possible that I don't ovulate anymore? What are the signs of ovulation. I have this pain in my lower abdomen almost throughout my cycle. I really need advice and help because I think I'm losing my head. Thanks.

Yes, an abortion can affect your ability to conceive, because it leaves scare tissues that can prevent an embryo from attaching to the uterine wall. However, before you give up, it often takes 9-18 months for couples to conceive. Here are some ideas:
1. To know when you are most fertile, watch your discharge. When you are ovulating, it is the consistency of egg whites. (I know yuk!, but I have to be graphic to give you good information). It should feel very slippery and actually stretch between your thumb and index finger. Once you stop ovulating, it gets thicker and more creamy and sticky. This will give you a good indication of when you are ovulating.
2. If the pain in your abdomen is constant, then I'd talk with your doc or ob about that. However, mild pain during ovulation is very common.
3. You could try the basal method (which means taking your temp with a thermometer every single day first thing in the morning). when you temp goes up 2 tenths of a degree, you should be hitting the end of ovulation.
4. Go on vacation. Its amazing how getting away can help move things along. Don't PLAN to get pregnant on the vacation, but definitely work out the "timing". Go somewhere relaxing and have no agenda. Getting away worked for us, my sister in law, my best friend, and three other friends. It's surprising how getting away and not constantly thinking about it allows you to get pregnant.
5. Remember the math. In general, you ovulate sometime between 8 and 21 days AFTER your period STARTS (not ends like many people believe). Technically it's 12-18 days before your period starts, but who's so clockwork that you can choose that exact date? Anyway, on the 8th day after your period starts, start watching your discharge. It will tell you when you are most fertile.

Best of luck to you. I know it's scary and frustrating, but it hasn't been that long. If your body is healthy and your husband's sperm has been checked then there isn't any reason to get worried. During your exam, your doc would have been able to tell if you had scarring that could prohibit you from conceiving or endometriosis which will also prevent you from conceiving.

My last concern is that you may have an ovarian cyst. That could be what's causing the abdominal pain and cysts often are responsible for missing ovulation.

Best of luck to you.

no it doesn't effect your chances of conception. Stress can though. you may on some level feel guilty, so your stressing about it thus off setting your cycle. As long as your menstruating you are ovulating, as you said you've been to a doc and everything is clear. keep trying, and consider having his sperm levels checked.

It reduces your chances, yes:

You may have endometriosis and/or ovarian cysts, both of which can lead to infertility.

Yes, it can cause detrimental effects. But quit stressing on it.
If you're trying to conceive, and its consuming your mind, its less likely to happen. Relax and good luck!

Re. "Yes, it can cause detrimental effects" -- no; not if it was properly done and there were no complications.
