Contact the California Bar association, they are responsible to conduct investigations on Attorney mis-conduct.
Good luck, I usually end a blog with that but have to be up front, you have a slim chance as the Bar backs the bar in my experience.
I contacted the California Bar association 2 years ago with a complaint against an attorney that once represented me. The attorney contacted a percipient witness in a disciplinary matter I charged against another Police Officer. The attorney informed said witness "I did the same thing" I accused the officer of; the attorney was aware of "the same thing" as he defended me on the matter a year prior. The fact was I did not commit "the same thing" and if I had it was "attorney client privledged" and confidential.
I contacted the Bar and Spoke with a slap-happy attorney, gave him the facts and then gave him the name of ther percipeint witness the attorney contacted.
A month later I get a letter from the Bar saying my complaint was not substatiated. Ok, would be nice if they actually DID THIER JOB; however, they never contacted the witness to corroborate my complaint....
Believe it.
My advice is to file your bar complaint, then find a legal malpractice attorney and go for blood...
In short, The system is full of weak links....

You should google the state bar association of the state (i.e. Idaho Bar Association) where the lawyer practices. I am not a lawyer but I have friends who are, and this is very bad when this happens. If it is unclear I might consult with another lawyer first because a bar complaint is a pretty big step to take.

I am answering from BC, Canada.
To make a complaint, you contact the Law Society in your province and describe what happened. The Law Society will investigate, giving you and the lawyer a chance to have a say.
If you want to review the lawyer's account, go down to the nearest court and say you want to do a fee review. The staff there should be able to guide you through the paperwork. The time limit on this is not very long, so get it going ASAP if this is something you want to do.
