Quite possibly a virus, but you could try starting your computer in safe mode which will load everything except the internet. To do this you need to start your computer and keep pressing F8, I'm on windows xp and you should get a black screen come up before the windows desktop loads. Look for the Start in safe mode option and sellect with arrow keys and then press enter. If you find it starts fine then you know it's down to the internet things and not your computer. I would then run a virus check, if that doesn't work then if you know when your computer was running ok, I would do a system restore back to that date and that should sort it out.

Some okay answers, defrag is a good thing to do but if there is junk or resource hogging programs running in the background it's not going to make much difference. Two things you could have a look at are the amount of junk that can clutter and system over time, programs like Ccleaner are good and easy to use for the novice as long as you are running Windows operating systems, another interesting program is HijackThis (unfortunate name)a bit more advanced with a good chance that if you mis-use it your system will need to be re- installed, it works by looking at programs that run in the background either ones you have installed or ones that have installed themselves and giving you the option of removing them.
The second option is to follow a good tweak guide to maximise the speed of your system.

The #1 mistake new PC owners make is to surf with internet explorer, the included web browser.

This is bad, because it's not your fault at all. But Internet explorer has a very poor reputation for allowing things you didn't want on your computer - such as viruses, unauthorised programs and the like - to install themselves without your knowledge.

To be honest it sounds like your system is too far gone, but don't panic, you don't need a new computer. I recommend you check your local ad rag for someone who will backup your personal data, reinstall windows and restore your data. This should cost you around £40 if you don't mind a spotty teenager doing it.

As soon as they're done, give them another tenner to set up a firewall, adware scanner and Firefox, which is an alternative web browser with a far better reputation for security.

Best of luck! Remember it's not your fault, but you still need to do something to protect yourself against it happening again.

Scan your PC for spyware.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free. After you install any of them, make sure you update them to get the full affect.

AVG anti virus/anti spyware remover.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

Sounds like you could have a lot of programs loading and running in the background. 1st thing I would do is download the program Ad-aware, free program, can't beat it. Here is the link to it http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10639408.html?tag=lst-0-1

The second thing that I would do takes some computer know how. Click on the start button then click on "Run". Type in msconfig, and click on run. A program will come up, click on the tab that says "Startup". This will show you every program that is scheduled to start when you boot up your PC. Anything that you are not familiar with, or don't need uncheck it. This should help out a GREAT deal. Good luck!

OK...i know how you feel. Stop take a deep breath and then go into start>all programs>accessories>disk defragmenter....run this program, it may take a long time (overnight even) this should help a lot. Also you could try in the same place disk cleanup. Try doing both of these once a week. Your computer should speed up, but i take it you are on dial up? Sign up for Broad Band now (cos it will take you 6 weeks to get it...they tell you 5 days forget it it will take 6 weeks) Your computer will then be super fast and you will enjoy it again!

First things first, if you've got broadband, get a firewall, i recommend Zone Alarm. Its free and monitors everything going to and from your computer onto the network (internet). If something is trying to use your computer and you don't know what it is, it will ask your permission and you can refuse it.

It does sound like your computer is riddled with spyware and probably viruses too. Use an antivirus (AVG is free) and spyware remover (Ad-aware) and also immunize your PC with spybot aswell.

there are some good guides pinned to the forums on this site

I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

These are cleanup tools. Ad-aware cleans files, and SpyBot cleans the registry,

You might run your Anti-virus scan.

Go to START and pick RUN. Type MSCONFIG and go to the startup section. Uncheck the programs that you do not need. Keep your Anti-virus checked.

Go to START and pick RUN. Type MSCONFIG and hit OK. Go to the startup section and UNCHECK several of the programs that you do not need. (if you are running Windows 98 or ME, you will just have to live with it).

Yes, open MY COMPUTER and right click on your C drive and pick PROPERTIES. Go to the TOOLS section and use CHECK NOW. Check both tests, then restart your computer to run the full test.

Use Disk Cleanup from the SYSTEM TOOLS section of ACCESSORIES.

Then run DEFRAG from the SYSTEM TOOLS section of ACCESSORIES.

Right Click on MY COMPUTER and pick the Advanced section. Look for your Virtual Memory section and assign more Disk space for this. You might get fewer LOW VIRTUAL MEMORY warnings by setting it to 2048. That's 2GB of Disk space reserved for this. (You have plenty).

But if you don't have 512MB of RAM, you need more. You see, Windows Updates and Anti-virus definitions really clog things up. You have to have these, so as time goes on, you need MORE RAM. Visit http://www.coastmemory.com and look up your computer. These people guarantee RESULTS.

Good luck and Happy Computing!
