I don't think it's true, but I would watch cats around newborns. I have 4 cats and a 4 month old. We keep her room closed off to the cats and never leave her alone with them even for a minute. They generally leave her alone and occasionally sniff her.

That rumor comes from cats sucking the breath out because of the milk smell.

No they don't suck they breath out however there were quite a few cases when cat can suffocate the baby simply placing its body over baby's face , if the baby s young and can not move itself - work it out ....
And the reason cats sneak into cots because they look for something warm to lean to ...
So babies and cats need to be at the very long distance from each other .

No, but they can lay on their head and prevent the baby from breathing. My nephew, however, loved to sleep with the cat because she would purr. Just be careful and watch them and don't let the cat stay in the room at night. If you ever catch the cat on the babies head, don't let them sleep together again.

No, that's an old wives tale. How exactly would a cat suck a baby's breath out?

It could lay on the babies head and smother it I guess. But it couldn't suck the breath out of it.

I do not believe that is true. A more likely situation is that the cat would snuggle up to the baby and possibly could suffocate the baby that way.

That''s a wives tale....BUT they like warmth, they could cuddle up to the face and accidentally suffocate the baby....also, the baby could breath in the hairs, which are very fine and could develop asmah or allergies.

no thats an old wives tale, but cats do like to cuddle up with the baby and they have a tendency to suffocate them (accidentally).
