How the hell smart is your kid that his school has him building robots in the 1st grade?

Definitely go with a kit! I'd start with the online hobby shops if you don't have a store in your area. (I'm not sure if Toys R Us would carry something like this.) Try a search online through Yahoo or Google for "robot kit build" -- I think you'll save yourself some time and headache by going that route. Best of luck to you and your little one!
