I have just formatted my pc, stuck a fresh copy of XP on there after i was infected with PC VD, i would like to get my computer secure, preferably for free.
I started With CCleaner, now i need a firewall, antivirus, and spyware scanner.

the best free programs are
1)zonealarm (it's free and easy, plus it comes with a video telling you all it does!)
2) avg antivirus (it's free too, and you get free virus udates!!)
download both from www.computeractive.co.uk
pp:no being cheeky, but the sites free to use and browse so check out the forums for up to date expert advice too!

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free. After you install any of them, make sure you update them to get the full affect.
AVG anti virus/anti spyware remover.
AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

Windows XP firewall is usually enough especially if you also have firewall on your Router (most routers have it). As far as the best free spyware and antivirus tools out there, they are Spyware Terminator and AVG AntiVirus. Links below.

Windows defender for antivirus and Xp Sp2 has a built in firewall. Avg is good. For top security you should go with Norton or Mcaffe but its going to cost you.

Recently had XP reinstalled on my computer because of the windows genuine advantage thing,up until then i used Norton, but the guy who sorted out XP for me put the free AVG anti-virus on ...I think it's much better and can recommend it..it updates daily and it also scans the computer when you first boot up,although you can cancel the scan if you want

Check out this page: http://www.mbusbyuk.info/links.html
There's loads of free security programs and even online scans.
It might be worth reading the Security page on the same site if you need more info about security.
Good Luck!

adware, spybot together is sufficent as long as you have a firewall on your router. If not, look for Tiny Personel Firewall, on eof the best and free.
