In the process of being confirmed, the Islanders have acquired forward Ryan Smyth from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Robert Nilsson, Ryan O'Marra, and a first round draft pick. Is this THE trade of the day for the Eastern Conference? Or has there been another more significant move?

Going by career stats of the players, I would say that the Roberts deal was bigger, but as for what the player's are doing now, Smyth is the biggest aquisition in the East. The Islanders are trying to make a push for the playoffs, so I suspect it might be a rental deal (Smyth could come back to Edmonton in the off-season). Other notable deals are Perreault to Toronto, Biron (best backup in the league) to Philly and Boyes (great young talent) to St. Louis from Boston.
I hope Smyth enjoys his possible playoff stint, because if he's coming back to Edmonton, good luck even making the playoffs

It's probably the trade of the day for the entire league. Ryan Smyth was the heart and soul of the Oilers. I can't believe Edmonton would actually trade him. For such crap players too.

Oh darn, I thought San Jose was trying for Smyth. Too bad for them. I think this could quite possibly BE the trade of the day most definitely. I like the NY Islanders....and Ryan Smyth!

Yeah, Ryan Smyth is a key acquisition for the Islanders, definitely.

This is a player rental trade - Smyth ends up signing back with Oilers in off season (or he becomes a Leaf) - big price for a rental on a team that can't win - if Yashin is your top player you're not going far in the playoffs - if you get in

I think this was the trade of the day for the eastern conference. It is a sad day in edmonton, especially today being that it is mark messier day in edmonton. Ryan will be missed. Islanders got lucky.

for the eastern conference this is hands down the trade of the day.

what can compete with this? Gary Roberts to Pittsburgh? Yannic Perrault to Toronto? nothing compares with this......

I may go as far as saying that this was the trade of the day in the entire NHL!

That is a very good deal for the Isles only if they can sign him at the end of the season. If not it would be like renting a mansion and never stepping foot into it.
