I recently bought a new PC, with 200gb, 512mb, 3GHZ and Windows XP. I'm looking to update...what can I do to improve it, other than upgrading to Vista?

Thanks to all who've answered so far ~ What should I buy to upgrade the RAM? Any suggestions on things you've bought personally?

....And what is a video card used for?

If you are going to upgrade to Vista, you would want to add more memory.

Come to think of it, it will probably be a good upgrade to add another 512mb right now. It will speed up your computer a bit.

Your ram (current at 512mb) is probably one of the weaker components of the system. If you upgrade to 1gb or 2 even, you will get a huge boost in performance. Also, depending on your video card, a nice video card will enhance performance a lot, especially if you have a generic video card in it currently.

Ram is the speed of your system as well as a good processor. Your processor is fin by 512 ram is quite limited.
I would think about increasing it to 1 GB of Ram.

xp is good don't go to vista there are not enough drivers out yet. how ever you would want more ram and what type cpu do you have if its intel well 3gh is not any better then a 2.0gh unless it has a hyperthread. see if you could get a dual core(amd), fx(amd) or core duo(intel)
