There are several possible answers to your question and we would need more info to tag down the real problem. The first question I would ask is: is it much slower recently than it has been in past? Followed by, has anything changed on your system recently? If you are talking about a gradual decrease in speed over time, then the advice given previous to backup your data and restore your computer might be the best approach. If you have had a dramatic decrease in performance in a short period of time, then we might need more info such as anything you have installed or changed with your configuration recently? Last two questions, you mentioned that you ran a virus scan, however did you make sure you have the latest definitions and what virus scanner did you use? Also, do you use anything like Limewire or other peer-to-peer file downloading software? You might try using an online virus scan such as http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ as a secondary scan. There are some newer, harder to detect viruses going around out there.

Its probably because your system is haunted. I once had the ghost of a untrained mountain goat living in my computer. Long story short it led to some baaad problems. My advice put a head of lettuce in the CDROM drive and leave it unplugged over night.

Have you scanned for spyware using something like Spybot Search and Destroy (a free program, google it)? Computers almost always get bogged down over time. How old is it?

Bump that memory up to at least 512MB (get 1 gig if it will support it and you can afford it). Also I recommend backing up your valuable data and running your recovery disk. Choose the destructive mode so it will format the hard drive. It will run like a new computer

You are going to have to give us more information.

What are the specifications of your computer? Processor, Ram, etc...

What operating system?
