Sandwiches were named after the Earl of Sandwiche who refused to leave a game of cards at his gentlemans club when he was hungry and requested that some slices of beef be brought to him between slices of bread, the name stuck and so we have sandwiches. Americans call them sandwiches the same as we do.

The word sandwich that we use today was born in London during the very late hours one night in 1762 when an English nobleman, John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792), was too busy gambling to stop for a meal even though he was hungry for some food. The legend goes that he ordered a waiter to bring him roast-beef between two slices of bread. The Earl was able to continue his gambling while eating his snack; and from that incident, we have inherited that quick-food product that we now know as the sandwich. He apparently had the meat put on slices of bread so he wouldn’t get his fingers greasy while he was playing cards.

Some dishes we just take for granted, but often there is a great story behind them. The USA, Turkey and countries in South America may be the master creators of well-loved sandwiches, but the word sandwich itself actually comes from a country of fish & chips and tea, the UK. “Sandwich” is in fact a namesake of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who was believed to have created the dish during one of his gambling marathons. This happened back in the 18th century at a steak restaurant in London. He asked the chefs there to create a meal that he could eat while playing cards and would not get his hands greasy. The chefs then decided to serve their beef steaks between two slices of bread. The practical way of eating a steak caught on with the Earl, as well as the other men in the restaurant, who then started to order “the same as Sandwich”. Hence, the name and practice of having a sandwich was born.

Americans call them sandwiches the same as we do. When you put two slices of bread together, you have created a sandwich. This means even a burger can be categorised as a sandwich.

Hi Tamara,
I may be able to help on this one .........
The sandwich was introduced by John Montague the Fourth Earl of Sandwich. There story goes that he was an enthusiastic gambler and when he didn't wish to leave the gaming table to go to dinner being on a winning streak he would ask for someone to bring him some meat between a couple of slices of bread. Then others began asking for the same thing, they would say something like, I'll have what Sandwich is having therefore getting the name for the snack. The French disagree, as they do, saying
it was a peasant food for poor workers.
Our friends over the pond call it a "Club" the origin of the name Club is thought to be either from the restaurant menu in a Country Club or from the snack bar service in a Club Car of one of the special trains that travelled from New York to Chicago in the 30's and 40's when people did not want to vacate their seats

It's widely believed that the Earl of Sandwich was about to eat when he was called to battle. He asked for his meat to be put between two slices of bread so he could take it with him. And the sandwich was born! Americans call sandwiches, err, sandwiches!
