Apples & oranges, at least for the last 50 years or so. The caste was a central government recognized and sanctioned separation of its people. One could not move out of the caste they were born to. In the US class structure one can move up or down depending on wealth earned. The class structure is not goverend by law, rather it is a societally self imposed and temporary classification.

The only similarity I can think of and argue is...The Caste system in India dictates what you do in life and there is nothing one could do to change it. Some sociologists argue that most people in the United States stay in the same income bracket and social class as their parents due to networking issues. Its not what you know, it is who you know. Perfect example is Paris Hilton. If her family did not have all that money, she would be another average, unattractive girl. So, in many ways our income brackets are similar to the caste system in India. The difference being we are able to choose and make decisions to move up on the social ladder.
