The free version is illegal. It's more like how much money you'll pay IF you're caught. Millions of people do it. Historically, the ones who are caught usually settle for several thousand dollars.

It is legal if you paying for the downloads. If not you will have to pay what ever fee the RIAA imposes if you are caught. They get around the law by making the program tell you that you are not downloading official music from Limewire.
