The main disadvantage: You really don't have anyone on your side. The Realtor cannot disclose certain information to you about the seller. If he/she were representing just YOU, he/she could disclose ANY pertinent information he/she had about the seller/selling circumstances.
Now, it is to YOUR advantage to find a Realtor to represent you in this transaction. Buyers typically pay nothing for the representation because the seller's agent shares his/her commission with a cooperating agent.

Yes, the biggest disadvantage is that the realtor is trying to work in both of your best interests. He wants to get the maximum possible for the seller since that's what he's paid to do so your negotiation power may be a little decreased. He may discourage the price you suggest or may not be as helpful. Although there are some honest realtors, it's hard when not to be slightly biased when working for both parties during the negotiating stages.
