sure it will help with the pain but it will only prolong it. You can pump a small amount of milk out to relieve the engourgment feeling but if you pump too much milk it will stimulate your brain to make more milk and the problem will continue. Try getting some cabbage leaves (I know sounds strange) and putting them in your bra. The cool leaves will help with the pain and apperently there is something in the cabbage that will help stop milk production. I did this when I quit nursing with both my daughters.

If you're having pain, you need a lactation consultant or La Leche League (LLL), not a breast pump. Pain is not normal. You should never feel pain when breastfeeding. If you are serious about wanting to breastfeed, please contact your local LLL leader (see link below). They are friendly, knowledgeable, often available 24 hours a day, and always FREE. They can help you figure out why you are experiencing pain. In most cases, pain is a symptom of a poor latch, and it can be easily corrected. There is no reason why you should have to experience any pain while feeding your child, and there is also no reason why you should have to give formula to your baby (unless you want to).

Good luck, and feel free to contact me with any breastfeeding questions you might have!

If you are going to continue breast feeding continue pumping if not STOP now because your body will continue producing milk aslong as you do. Take some ibuprofen and hot showers and wear a tight bra or sports bra until the swelling goes down maybe a couple of days. good luck

Nursing can be very painful in the begining, but this shouldn't discrorage you from trying. I don't think a pump is the answer to your problem, it will take lots of time and practice to make it work and painless.
But don't feel guilty if you need to use formula either. I feel both are acceptable choices, no matter who tells you what.

I have larger breasts and when I was pregnant they really did not get that sore. I think that breast feeding and pumping 24/7 would be more painful than letting your breast get a little full with milk for a few months. I never leeked or anything. My boobs were sore after pregnancy, yes, but There were many other pains to worrie about than my breasts. (back, bum, etc...... ;-)) Please if you are second guessing your self than just do what you feel most comfortable with, do not let people talk you into breast feeding. Its your choice and no way is the RIGHT way!!!! good luck

When I tried to nurse it hurt so ban I couldn't do it, and I have seen friends use the pump and they have screamed out in pain. I think it all depends on the person. Do what you want to don't base your choose on someone telling your breast will hurt, I never breast feed and the pain in my breast was not that bad at all. good luck and congrads

Well from what I can make out from your question I think you should breast feed and you need to go to see a women that is trained from The La Leche Leage - visit http://www.yourchildrennaturally.com and read the breastfeeding articles and then go to www.lalecheleage.com and see what to do.

Breast feeding does hurt for a while at first but there are numerous things that contribute to extended pain of the breasts

If you pump then this will boost your milk supply only making matters worse. Try to breastfeed first but if it turns out that you can't then my friend took a cold and flu table which dried her milk up really quickly!

if you breast feed your baby it is very painfull ( or it was to me)
if you decide to bottle feed your baby you should bond your self up with a towel around your breat this will make you milk run out it must be tight and keep it tight till your dried up take it off for showers and things and then wrap them up TIGHT IT MUST BE TIGHT
