My baby almost died at birth because of the doctors mistake. I though that medical care in US is one of the best ones, that is why I decided not to go back to Europe to deliver my baby. But now I know I am having the next one somewhere else as according to CNN and other newspapers US has second worst newborn death rate in modern world.

It's not because of the doctors or hospitals. It's because there are soo many people in the US that don't have access to the hospitals and doctors here. Not everyone can afford medical care. There's a lack of national health insurance. There's nothing a doctor can do to reverse what a mother has done during the course of her pregnancy without him. That's why the death rate is so high.

In many countries, babies are not counted as live births until they reach a certain benchmark - anywhere from one week to three months. Any newborns that die during that period are not counted.

In other countries, if the baby is born alive but is not considered viable, it is not counted. Also if it is born premature for any reason.

It is actually BECAUSE of our great healthcare for babies that our numbers are skewed.

For example, if a baby is born with a major health problem, that would have led to death elsewhere, we are able to treat it so the baby can survive for a few days. If 1 out of 10 of those babies lives to the age of one year, that means that we report 9 infant mortalities. Whereas in other countries, all 10 babies with that condition died within a few hours of birth, and were counted as stillborns.

The highest rates globally were in Africa and South Asia. With a newborn death rate of 65 out of 1,000 live births, Liberia ranked the worst.

The United States is tied with Hungary, Malta, Poland and Slovakia with a death rate of nearly 5 per 1,000 babies. About half a million U.S. babies are born prematurely each year, data show. African-American babies are twice as likely as white infants to be premature, to have a low birth weight, and to die at birth, according to Save the Children. Other possible factors in the U.S. include teen pregnancies and obesity rates, which both disproportionately affect African-American women and also increase risk for premature births and low birth weights.

It's not always the doctor's fault. Some people continue to smoke, drink, do drugs, use caffeine, etc. while pregnant. You're not supposed to even dye your hair or use lice shampoo while pregnant. Some people deliver too early because they continue to work at stressful jobs, jobs with lifting involved, other heavy work.

Perhaps people in other countries get more prenatal care, and take better care of themselves while pregnant. Maybe they quit their stressful or heavy-work jobs (or at least take a sufficient leave-of-absence).

Maybe US people have a higher newborn death rate because there are simply more people here--so the rate is going to look higher.

Ok first I have to say I love the Roe vs. Wade answer! I think its partially the doctors in our country but I think another huge factor is pregnant women not taking care of themselves. Drinking, smoking, using drugs, over exerting themselves, not eating right and so on.

i believe birth is not a medical event. I believe Doctors are trained for medical interventions. Basically they mess with it when you just should let it be.... I'm talking contractions to cord blood- get the doctors out of birthing. find out more at http://www.yourchildrennaturally.com

I think it's like football games. Any team can win or lose on a given Sunday. However, you pick the best hospital and doctor you can if you have the chance and hope for the best.

Well, American Dr's are quick to use interventions.

Inducing labor can result in maternal death as well as fetal death... it can also lead to a c-sec, which is more risky for both mom and baby.

The high use of pain meds also leads to more c-sec, which leads to more infant death.
