FREEDOM, and only freedom. Equality is a very large load of cow patties.
People are NOT equal to each other. Select any two people you want and:
One will be smarter than the other
One will be stronger that the other
One will be more attractive than the other
And the list goes on as long as you can come up new traits. Even identical twins are not IDENTICAL.
The ONLY way to approximate equality is to tilt the playing field. If you handicap the genius enough, and supplement the intellectually challenged enough they will be equal. But it only happens in fairy tales. Under any other circumstance it is preferential treatment.

Let's not confuse equality with equal rights. By all means, this democracy should strive for and mandate by law that all citizens have equal rights. But this does not guarantee them equality.
Equality is, in fact, an impossibility under a democratic republic. To be truly equal, you would have a Utopian communistic society where all that exists is divided equally among all others. But of course, true equality is even impossible under communism because there would always be some people who would claim their right to have more.
Freedom, on the other hand, is one of the cornerstones of our democratic republic. We have the freedom to pursue our dreams, voice our opinion, worship our individual God, and defend our rights to do so. But, of course, all of these freedoms are tempered by laws that insure that our freedoms do not impact the rights and/or sovernties of others.
Basically, our freedom allows us all to pursue our impossible dream of equality.

First off, free men are not equal, and you are right...you can't have both. A democracy is basically mob rule, or whoever's gang is bigger, so freedom is inconsistent with it.
And to the person who said the Founders started a democracy I suggest you do your homework. Specifically, read the Federalist Papers. They used some democratic principles in setting up our government, but did in fact abhor pure democracy.

A democracy should strive for equality. A democracy often results in freedom, but it's more about everyone having an equal say in what's going on.
The United States should strive for both.

Well, our representative republic should strive for freedom. Equality is socialism/communism.
It is impossible for freedom to exist where there is equality because the freedom of achieving individuals has to be restrained in order for those less fortunate to achieve equality. Therefore, freedom is suspended for 'the greater good'. Beware of the phrase, 'the greater good'. It really means, ' you are not allowed!'

Since "democracy" is the tool that socialist use to turn free republics into communism, I am confident that democracy works for "equality".
However, if you consider our Constitutional Republic, you will easily see that freedom and individual responsibility are the order of the day.
God, I wish more people "got it" that democracy is the redheaded sister of socialism and our founding fathers abhorred democracy for the freedom killing tool that it is.
WE ARE NOT A DEMOCRACY PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!! GOD SAVE US FROM BOTH SOCIALISM AND DEMOCRACY.

I think American democracy should strive for the rights of Americans. When we try to free other countries(so they have freedom), does it not infringe on the freedoms of its own citizens? When we try to give equality to other countries in the country of America, does it not infringe on the equality of its on peope?

Both. neither is easy to come by or to hold. Some see quality as freedom and freedom as equality.
