Another question I answered got me going...

In general, does the public think CPS is a good/ bad idea... Think about it, is it not in the childs best interest to be with the parents unless absolutly immediate threat to the child is present?

I know of a few cases...

1) Man in cali got CPS called on him for not giving his daughter a medicine that caused her more health problems then the one she already had.. Has been fighting back and forth for 5 years, lots of money, and his wife has been in and out of the hospital ever since with anxiety...

2) Me :) I dont vaccinate my children. Recieved a call last year saying I had CPS called on me ect... I could not for the life of me figure out why, then it hit me, my son was just in the hospital... So I asked if it was because I didnt vaccinate, sure enough, that was in the report, although the basis was said to be because I didnt fill a perscription... Which I never got... Because vaccinating is a choice, they couldnt call on the basis of not vaccinating, so they did it under false pretenses of not filling a perscription... Once medical records were obtained (I released them, since I knew I never got a script!) they saw there was never any script given... It was for a ear infection my son had... he was given higher dosages through IV for 3 days in the hospital since this was his 3rd one in 2 months.... Why wouldnt I have just given him the meds? Wouldnt I want him better?

Should health care workers be able to call CPS if you dont administer every med they throw at you?

I think a LOT of kids are taken away needlessly... If I didnt have food in my cubbored when they were 6 months old, they could have taken them away... What does me having laundry sitting out folded (they look for "clutter") have to do with how I take care of my kids?

And of course, I think in theory, being able to protect children is absolutly wonderful. We need too, there are very very bad people out there. But we really have no rights. Anyone can claim ANYTHING about you, and its truth... That is not right....

I can choose not to vaccinate because I feel like it hurts my kids. Religious reasons, dont like the word... It doesnt matter WHY I dont do it, its the point that I dont want to, for one reason or another... As americans, dont we have the choice what to put into our bodies?

Cps or the idea of it in general is a good and much needed type of agency. But when you take a good idea and implement bad people or people that are given too much authority and lead way, then you'll have a good situation turned in to an ugly one. That is the state of the current cps system today.

I think when the idea was first started, it was started with good intentions, but over the years it has went downhill, and fast! I think anytime you have a system where a complete stranger is able to throw out allegations, and for someone to come out and investigate just off a phone call alone is not good. This opens doors for false allegations and anything else like it.

Anytime you have workers that are able to barge into your home and just take away your kids based on a dirty house, an unruly child being spanked, etc, again; that is not good. And what I'm geting at is these days, cps and the government period, needs to keep their noses out of people's households and let the parents rear their kids the way they see fit. If a kid is not going to school covered in bruises, appears happy, well nourished and thriving, cps should stay out of it!

CPS is a good idea in general since the government cannot decide who can and cannot have children they should be able to make sure children are being cared for properly.

As for the examples you cited, agencies do get it wrong sometimes. In fact there are examples of when CPS should sanction parents but they do not. The problem is, as with most social services, CPS is rewarded for finding more cases than they really need to.

There are always pro's and con's to every situation.

I've had very close friends whom I've known to have had false allegations of child neglect made simply because the unclothed child ran out of the house immediately after getting a bath while the mother was ten feet behind the child. CPS was called because the complainant didn't see the WHOLE picture!

Being in law enforcement, I also see families who abandon their proper care of children due to drug abuse. In cases such as these CPS is able to enter the home environment without the same constraints as law enforcement to protect the welfare of the child.

It's the best system available for now and until something better comes along...we use it to our advantage!

Best wishes.

The more basic question: Yes, CPS is, in general, a good idea. Protecting children from harm is a good thing. Only a monster would be against the general idea of protecting children from harm.

However, in your case (where you failed to vaccinate)... it's questionable if you are causing harm to your child. If you have a religious belief for not doing so, that's one thing. If you believe that the vaccination would be harmful for your child, that's one thing.

But ignoring it is quite another. That's negligence and yes, it is the right thing for a hospital to call CPS for investigation.

its a good idea in thoery. i mean, why wouldnt we want to keep our kids safe?! but right now we are abusing the power and taking kids from parents who arent really putting their children in any danger (like your incident w/ the CPS for example..)

It's a good idea, but sometimes executed badly.
