Corduroy was the name of the book and the name of the bear. It is still popular in bookstores and at the library.

I thought it was in a laundromat. 'A Pocket for Corduroy' by Don Freeman. He hears his owner's mother saying 'empty your pockets' and wants a pocket of his own. He wanders through all the clothing at the laundromat looking for something to make a pocket from and gets lost. He isn't found until the next morning, when the little girl who owns him makes him a pocket.

I remember a bear named Courdoroy but that is all. Paddington had a yellow rain coat.
