a friend to whom i have told i want to discuss some very personal details of my past, is willing to listen, but has urged me to be cautious and think carefully beforehand. What are the pro's and con's. Im not sure doing so, it will make a difference.

It sounds as if your friend may want you to think about it first. Some times after one tells someone that is very personal, they experience "emotional backlash" this is when they tend to beat themselves up for revealing information that has always been kept private. So if you wish to talk with someone and you feel you can trust this person and it is safe for you to do so then I don't see a problem with it. Just remember that friends are not bound to confidentiality such as counselors or therapist. I would hope that a true friend would have a moral obligation to no divulge any info that could hurt you in the long run. In short this is a decision that is best left to you and only you. If you need to talk, I suggest going to a professional that is qualified and willing to listen and assist you.

your concerns are ok to reveal to a friend but through my life's experience with friends, there are some that you can't really trust. be cautious and dont tell everything like your innermost secret. dont reveal too much of yourself because when the time comes that the friendship will turn sour, you will not fear that he/she can disclose your secrets to stab you at the back.

From what you say it sounds like he/she doesn't want to get involved Seek out a family member or cousin if you can't write all of this out writing is very healing
