I keep hearing that San Francisco and Seattle are strikingly similar in culture/socially, politically, climate, and setting. Can anyone who has lived in both cities attest to this given the above mentioned attributes?

I've lived in Seattle, and am a native of the Bay Area.

Both cities are surrounded by a large body of water: Puget Sound and San Francisco Bay. They both have instantly recognizable skylines. Seattle: Columbia Seafirst Center and Space Needle. San Francisco: Transamerica Tower and Golden Gate Bridge.

Politically, Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area are bastions of Democratic politics (although Los Angeles is giving San Francisco a run for its money in that department lately). Both Seattle and San Francisco are known for their eccentric populations. And they're both new economy "high-tech" cities.

SEA-TAC and SFO are two of the better airports in the West, especially when it comes to eating. Seattle and San Francisco have tended to express wariness about freeways. They have them, but there's a stronger orientation towards street level interaction than most West Coast cities.

In terms of climate, they're both on the cool side. Although Seattle has much colder winters (it only snows about once every 25 years in San Francisco), San Francisco is fairly consistent with the wind and fog.

However, there are some notable differences as well...

San Francisco has a subway system, Seattle has a monorail (sort of).

San Francisco is less than half European (31% Asian, 14% Hispanic, 8% African), while Seattle is over 2/3 European (16% Asian, 6% Hispanic, 9% African).

Seattle has a much larger role in transportation manufacturing than San Francisco due to the presence of Boeing, Washington Ferries, and UPS. However, San Francisco has far more lawyers and politicians because it is the seat of the Federal Ninth Circuit and the California Supreme Court... as well as the home turf of House Speaker Pelosi, two U.S. Supreme Court Justices (Kennedy and Breyer), and both of California's U.S. Senators (Boxer and Fienstein).

Seattle is known for rock, punk, and grunge music. San Francisco is more into techno-trance (and Oakland is all about hip-hop).

Right on S.F. Dude.. Could not have said it better. We live in the S.F. Bay Area. but we really enjoy Seattle during the summer. Great clubs, restaurants and things to see, just like S.F.
