One of the great achievements in American history is the recognition of the abilities of handicapped people. We no longer hold stereotypes on the limitations of people who cannot see, or cannot hear, or cannot walk. With advances in prosthetics, persons with disabiltities can lead normal and fully productive lives. You should not be discouraged. A silicone brain prosthetic could be made available to you, so that you would no longer hear hollow sounds when you knock your head. Does that make you a "low intellect by nature"? Only if you allow yourself to be limited. If you stop these negative thoughts, probably instilled in you by others ignorant of your condition, you can take positve steps, gain confidence, and write that thesis paper so necessary for your PhD. And Godspeed!

Your skull contains the brain which floats in fluid. Your head is not a solid mass which would not make a hollow sound.

That is why you hear a sound much like thumping on a melon.
